My Personal Inflation Story
When I first read about inflation in my textbook , it didn't bother me at all. I was like, okay prices can rise sometimes , no big deal. But then something weird happened. I started seeing it in my life too. And honestly the experience was not so good. My shopping cart felt lighter… but my wallet felt heavier.
In this blog , I will navigate how inflation affected and changed my shopping habits.
Inflation
Inflation is the rise in the general price levels prevailing in an economy. In simpler words , inflation increases the cost of living, as it decreases the value of money.
E.g. , If the inflation level is 6%, then a Rs 100 purchase today , would cost Rs 321 in the next 20 years.
A Jump scare
The first change I noticed was the increase in prices of the basic goods and services.
Toothpaste went from Rs 80 to Rs 95.
Milk went from Rs 45 to Rs 54 per liter.
Cooking oil went from Rs 30 to Rs 40 per liter.
The Reality Check
The real problem started when I realized that the prices of things that I like also rose. Those chic clothes ,decadent treats and comfy shoes also became more expensive.
I started calculating everything
Is Rs 180 for fries really worth it.
Will it be better if I split my pizza with a friend.
Should I buy this shirt now or wait for a sale.
Double Checks
Earlier I used to shop and buy stuff , like there was no tomorrow. But now-
I check for free delivery and return policies.
Compare the prices of the same product or service , across different platforms.
Read reviews and ratings to avoid wasting money.
It is like I conduct my own mini research before spending even a penny.
Awareness But I won't say that inflation is only about the negatives. It does has a positive side too. Like it made me financially aware. I learnt new things like budgeting , conscious buying and even learnt to avoid spending on things that I don't need.
It’s not always easy—but understanding why it’s happening makes it manageable.
Note: Prices mentioned in this blog are approximate and based on recent trends in India. They may vary by brand, city, or outlet.
